Courtesy of: Erica Bennett (ArkLaTexhomepage.com), Sept. 10. 2008 " To fill their teacher shortage, the Caddo Parish School Board looked overseas. The Phillipines had a track record of producing teachers of the quality we were looking for. And in large numbers," Dr. Mary Nash Robinson of Caddo Schools says.Starting Friday, Filipino teachers will hit the classrooms, teaching math, science, even English. Many people are wondering how they will adjust to the new environment, and if thick accents will be a problem.... I do not see the language as being a barrier. We are doing some things with them today as far as communication skills. But it's not verbal; it's more the body language, that kind of thing," Robinson continues. The teachers say they are more concerned with familiarity and classroom discipline. "The biggest challenge is knowing the students. Basically as a teacher, I believe that 90 percent of my time will be dealing with the students and basically these are foreign students to me, " teacher Abraham Catahan says. "Discipline, the entire classroom environment. That's very important to handle here," teacher Wayne Domalaon says. Becky Thurman, who has a child in Caddo schools, thinks it will be easy for him to adjust to the teachers from afar. "They have to get used to new teachers just about every year anyway. So what is going to be the difference?" she asks. And those teachers are working and training so they won't see seem different, but right at home." |
