 " Five lucky Engineering students from various colleges and universities in the Philippines were recently awarded thesis grants by the Association of Filipino-American Engineers in Washington. AFEW, along with Ayala Foundation USA, selected some of the best and brightest Engineering students as recipients of Php 10,000.00 each....
The grant is envisioned to help augment the additional expenses that the students incur while doing their respective thesis projects. A simple awarding ceremony, to formally hand over the checks to the students was held at the Ayala Foundation USA office in Manila last April 20, 2009. Representing AFEW was Engr.Bert Caoili, AFEW Founding Member and First President. AFEW, composed of Filipino-American engineers based in Washington state, has been giving financial support to selected engineering students in the Philippines since 2003 as its members' way of giving back to the homeland. The recipients are the following: - Mr. Neil Chan P. Villegas is a 5th year B.S. in Electronics and Communications Engineering (BSECE) student of the University of San Carlos, Cebu City. His undergraduate thesis project is entitled "Traffic Monitoring System Using IP-based Camera through 3G Mobile Phone." Neil is a consistent Dean's lister, a member of the USC ECE quiz bowl team and a finalist for the 2009 Search for USC Outstanding Leader.
- Mr. Jerson T. Pagador is a 5th year student of BS Agricultural Engineering of Central Luzon State University, Munoz, Nueva Ecija.
- Mr. Kenneth John R. Racoma is a 5th year Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineerign Student of Cebu Institute of Technology, Cebu City. He is currently a DOST Scholar, a student leader and has received numerous awards in different school competitions.
- Mr. Recle E. Vibal is a graduating BS Chemical Engineering student of UP Los Banos. He is a consistent college and university scholar and has the potential to graduate with honors, Cum Laude.
- Mr. Michael Patrick R. Uson is a graduating Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering of University of Pangasinan, Dagupan City. He is working on a thesis entitled "Private Partking System using Biometrics and RFID."
These students, all consistent top notchers in their classes, make up some of the country's most promising future engineers. " As future engineers, you will have the unique ability to construct things that will directly benefit the lives of other people," Bert Caoili asserts, speaking to the group of students present. "As the youth, especially, much depends on your talents and abilities so wherever the road takes you, don't forget where you came from." Villegas and Racoma, 2 Engineering Students from Cebu, will be awarded their checks in a separate event in Cebu. Representing AFEW for the event is Roy S.Nudo.
